THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Andy Clyde1012 viewsFilm actor Andy Clyde was brought up in Helensburgh where his family had a grocers shop on West Princes Street. Son of a Scottish theatrical producer/manager, he joined his siblings David and Jean on stage in childhood. He went to the States in the early 1920s to join producer Mack Sennett's roster of comedians. An expert at makeup, Clyde played a variety of roles, from city slickers to unshaven bums. He appeared as California, comic sidekick to western star William Boyd, in the Hopalong Cassidy westerns.

Camis Eskan, circa 18401203 viewsThis painting by John Knox (1778-1845) shows some of the children of Colin Campbell of Colgrain fishing by the bridge in front of the remodelled house. He bought the estate in 1836 from James Dennistoun, the last of the Dennistouns of Colgrain, whose family had owned the land for over 500 years. The Dennistouns were granted the lands by the first Stuart king Robert II, who had married into the family, and whose son Robert III and all future Kings would have Dennistoun blood in their veins.

PS Maid of the Loch936 viewsThe 555 ton Maid of the Loch was the last paddle steamer built in Britain, and the last of a long line of Loch Lomond steamers beginning about 1816. Built by A. & J.Inglis of Glasgow, she was dismantled, shipped by rail to Balloch where the sections were reassembled, and launched on March 5 1953. Provost's Lamps1171 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
