Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Barremman_Pier1.jpg
End of the Pier Show1043 viewsThe pier at Barremman, Clynder, built about 1877 on the instructions of Robert Thom, owner of Barremman Estate, was blown up by the Army in November 1967, using 2lbs of plastic explosive, as it was the cheapest way to demolish the pier, which had become unsafe. District Clerk William Swan pressed the plunger at the invitation of D.Smith of Construction and Marine Ltd., Garelochhead. Photo by Donald Fullarton.
Rosneath-Shore-by-P_Kerr.jpg
Rosneath shore456 viewsAn etching of Rosneath shore and the Gareloch by Greenock-based artist Peter Kerr. The McLean Museum in Greenock has many of his paintings. Most of his landscapes were of the Clyde shores, and Cove and Kilcreggan. He was married to Catherine McMillan, born in Helensburgh in 1863, whose family owned the Teak and Ash. Image supplied by Malcolm LeMay, whose wife is a distant relative of the artist.

Rob-Roy_s-cave.jpg
Rob Roy's Cave754 viewsThe entrance to Rob Roy's Cave on Loch Lomond, circa 1915. It is sited on the east bank near Inversnaid and was not so much a cave as a shelter provided by the fallen rocks. It is thought to have provided shelter for both Rob Roy and Robert the Bruce — the latter is said to have been saved from his pursuers when sleeping wild goats in front of the cave misled his enemies into believing it was empty. Rob Roy was for a time Laird of Craigrostan and Inversnaid.

McInnes-shop-2~0.jpg
G.Arthur McInnes Ltd.1281 viewsA 1980s view of G.Arthur McInnes, Drapers, 77-81 Sinclair Street, Helensburgh. It opened on February 15 1929 on the site previously occupied by grocer R.M.Clyde, six years after Robert’s daughter Jean married George Arthur McInnes on January 3 1923. George died in 1937, but Jean carried on until her death in 1941. Her daughter Isobel — better known as Belle and wife of Waldies garage boss and town councillor George Aitkenhead — ran the business for many years with the aid of manager Duncan Ralph.
Cove-Burgh-Hall5032.jpg
Cove Burgh Hall735 viewsThen described as Kilcreggan Public Buildings and U.F.Church, this picture was used on a postcard published by Kerr, Post Office, Kilcreggan, circa 1905. It sits on the boundary between Cove and Kilcreggan and has been known for many years as Cove Burgh Hall. In recent years it has been very successfully run by a local committee who acquired it from the local authority for a nominal sum.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1096 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
