Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Trains at Ardui1366 viewsTwo steam trains on the West Highland Line at Ardlui Station, Loch Lomond, on August 13 1959. The engine which can be seen pulling a Glasgow train, no.61342, is a 71-ton Class B1 locomotive. Designed by Thompson, the class was introduced in 1942, and 409 were built.

Hermitage School3770 viewsThe old Hermitage School in East Argyle Street. It was built in 1880 in late Gothic style for the School Board of Row on land formerly part of Hermitage House and made available by the Cramb family, and had only five headmasters. The architect was William Spence, of Ardlui, 23 Charlotte Street, who also designed both the St Columba and Rhu churches. It was replaced by Hermitage Academy at Colgrain in 1966, and demolished in 1967.

New panel649 views'Henry Bell' unveiled a new panel featuring information about the town, including references to himself and his ground breaking invention, on Helensburgh seafront as part of the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4 2012. The panel replaces an earlier version which was one of ten put in place to encourage motorists to explore ‘The Clyde Sea Lochs Trail’, a scenic coastal route from Dumbarton via Cardoss, Helensburgh, Rhu, Garelochhead and the Rosneath Peninsula to Arrochar. Tracks cleared795 viewsOn Wednesday February 28 2018 an exceptionally severe blizzard hit much of Scotland and rail services were suspended. The following day a class 37 diesel locomotive with a snowplough was sent from Fort William to Bathgate and then back to Helensburgh to clear the tracks. It reached Helensburgh Central Station on the morning of Friday 2nd March, but passenger services from Helensburgh did not resume until the Sunday morning. Photo by Darrel Hendrie.

Provost's Lamps1171 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
