Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Farm ladies party868 viewsA FORMER Helensburgh woman now living in Shetland, Cathy Shearer, is trying to find out more about this photo of a group of women, including her granny, Barbara McAdam (back row 5th from left), who died in 1954 aged 67. The photo was taken between 1940-1954 by Alexandria photographers Leddy and Glen, probably in the Helensburgh area. At the time Barbara lived at either Callendoune Farm, Helensburgh, or Crossburn Cottage half a mile from the Cross Keys towards Luss. She would like to find out where and when the photo was taken, who the group of women are and what the occasion is. If you can help, please email the editor of this website.
St-Modan_s-Church5151~0.jpg
St Modan's, Rosneath754 viewsSt Modan founded a church at Rosneath in the 6th century, and died there. In 1880, a finely carved stone was dug up from the grounds of the present church. It has been dated to circa 800 A.D. and is thought to represent the tombstone of St Modan. It is preserved inside the church. The present building celebrated its centenary in 1953. In the grounds are the ruins of the previous church (1780), and the only known grave in Scotland of an African slave, Robert Story, who came to Scotland as a freed slave.

She was the second of two charitable training ships for boys, and was in the Gareloch from 1889 until the 1920s, with staff giving a tough and sometimes brutal training to the 300 boys on board at any time. Image circa 1908.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1156 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
