Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Mr and Mrs Andy Clyde1485 viewsMovie star Andy Clyde, one of three members of Helensburgh's Clyde family who made their names as actors, is pictured at home with his wife, former Mack Sennett bathing beauty Elsie Maud Tarran, on April 6 1934. He was an artist of no mean ability and often sketched his wife. The couple married on September 23 1932 in Ontario, San Bernadino, California. A son, John Allan, was born in 1935 but tragically died in 1944.

Wedding guest903 viewsJohn Logie Baird (2nd from right, back row), his father, the Rev John Baird (4th from left, front row), and his mother Jessie, a niece of the famous Inglis shipbuilding brothers Anthony and John, are seen in this wedding group outside the Queen's Hotel in Helensburgh on June 6 1922. The bride was JLB's sister Jeannie, known to friends as Tottie, and the groom is the Rev Neil Conley. Jessie Baird is on the bride's left, and JLB's sister Annie is immediately behind the groom. Far left back row is Anna Snodgrass (nee Inglis), aunt of Arnold Snodgrass. JLB is looking fit after a sojourn at a health spa. The Conleys' son Norman (b.1926) moved from Glasgow to Helensburgh about 2002 and passed away early in 2009. Norman's daughter Laura Conley (b.1954) is still living in the burgh.

Victoria-Road-(Walton).jpg
Victoria Road912 viewsA 33.6 x 51.4 cms watercolour of Victoria Road, Helensburgh, by Edward Arthur Walton (1860-1922), who spent many winters in the town and began in 1883 an innovative series of townscapes recording the genteel urban lifestyle of the wealthy residents.
Lansdowne-Park-w.jpg
Lansdowne Park1216 viewsBuilt in the 1850s and demolished about 2004, Lansdowne Park was on the east side of the Victoria Road and Sinclair Street junction in Helensburgh, opposite Prince Albert Terrace. Originally a private house, the ornate roof was added by architect William Leiper in 1896. Its last use was as a boarding house for St Bride's School and its successor Lomond School. After it was demolished, private houses and flats were built on the site. Image date unknown.
Camis_Eskan_1972-2.jpg
Camis Eskan House1811 viewsAn aerial view of Camis Eskan House, circa 1972, when it was in use as a hospital. The main part was built in 1648 by the Dennistouns, who had a royal connection through marriage. In 1836 the mansion was sold to Colin Campbell from Renfrewshire, and his descendants owned it until November 1946 when it was bought by the then Dunbartonshire County Council. Well known Helensburgh architect A.N.Paterson was commissioned by the then tenant, lawyer Leonard Gow, to modernise and extend the building in 1915. During the Second World War it was requisitioned by the Government and used as a hospital for Polish Army casualties, then rented to the County Council for use as a hospital for, first, TB patients, then infectious diseases, then maternity, and finally geriatric use. In 1979 it was developed for private flats and dwellings. Image supplied by Robert Reid.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1169 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
